Glenora is in Ward Nakota Isga, in west-central Edmonton, overlooking the North Saskatchewan River valley near the Alberta Legislature grounds. Like neighbouring Westmount, the land was part of Malcolm Groat's original river-lot homestead; Montreal grain merchant James Carruthers purchased and named the western portion “Glenora” in 1905–06, imposing restrictive building covenants to establish its exclusive character. Government House, built for Alberta's Lieutenant Governor, was completed on Glenora's southern edge in 1913.

Heritage experts, including the National Trust for Canada, have called Glenora one of Canada's best-preserved “Garden City” suburbs, citing its curvilinear streets and preserved river valley views. New construction today is infill — individual lot rebuilds — at some of the highest price points of any Edmonton neighbourhood on this site.
